Watch Now: Live Total Lunar Eclipse Webcast

  • 8:00 am |
  • Categories: Space

Starting at 8 a.m. EST, viewers can check out the above webcast to watch the last total lunar eclipse until 2014. The main event will start at 9:05 a.m. EST and last almost an hour.

The feed by will narrated by astronomer Bob Berman. He will be joined by BBC presenter Duncan Copp, who directed the Apollo documentary ?In the Shadow of the Moon,? and heliophysicist Lucie Green, from the Mullard Space Science Laboratory. Viewers will have the opportunity to call in and ask questions.

A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth slips between the sun and the moon, casting a long shadow on the lunar surface and darkening it. But sunlight filters in through the edges of the Earth?s atmosphere, casting a reddish-orange glow on the moon. This light is a projection of all the sunrises and sunsets happening on Earth at this time, creating a spectacular cosmic show.

Google Page Speed Online Comes Out Of Labs

The wait is over as the Google Page Speed Online has finally come out in the open from the Google Labs. Now. You can get to know the speed of your site, by dropping it on the search bar given right at the center of the tool page.

Online Page Speed

Google Page Speed is an online tool that will let you know the load speed of your site on a scale of 1 to 100. That's not all, it will also give you suggestions about what needs to be done to improve the page loading speed.

As Google says, Page Speed Online analyzes the content of a web page, then generates suggestions to make that page faster. Reducing page load times can reduce bounce rates and increase conversion rates.

Why The Need Of Fast Loading Sites?

Site load time is one of the major factors in reducing visitor's bounce back rates. It is an essential part of the entire user experience of your site, and a slow site leads to poor user experience. So, probably Google wants you to speed things up in the interest of the users!

Try out the online tool, drop your URL in the box and see the results for your site. Make the changes and ensure better user experience. How did you find the tool, do share your views.

10 reasons why things can get worse for RIM

No doubt about it: it?s been a dreadful year for Research In Motion Ltd. RIMM-Q, with a seemingly unending series of gaffes and disappointments for investors.

And Citigroup analyst Jim Suva is reminding us today that no matter how bad things seem to be - it may very well get worse.

Mr. Suva reaffirmed his ?sell-high risk? rating on RIM and $15 (U.S.) price target. RIM?s latest earnings will be released on Thursday and he?s not expecting many surprises given the company already issued a profit warning at the start of this month.

More related to this story

The focus will likely turn to RIM?s outlook for the fourth quarter, which ends in February, and for the fiscal year ahead.

Already the signs aren't promising. The company already hinted the current quarter will contain its share of disappointments, stating that it expects unit shipments to be below third-quarter levels. That would mark only the second time in a decade quarter-over-quarter unit sales declined in that three-month period.

?Bottom line, we believe RIM has no short-term fixes to improve product portfolio, brand perception, to reinvigorate share gains, revenue growth and profitability,? Mr. Suva said in a research note.

He provided these 10 reasons why things may get worse for RIM:

1) RIM is missing the Christmas shopping season setting up risk of additional loss of consumer mindshare.

2) Potential for delays in its QNX product launch initially scheduled for early calendar year 2012, as problems with QNX tablet security & native email leads to QNX phone delays.

3) RIM cannot cancel its Playbook program as the QNX language is the future of the company, which developers & enterprises need to work with.

4) RIM is missing much of the Nokia share opportunity while Apple and Android are grabbing this share.

5) New iPhone 4S recently launched to pressure RIM's North America business as Verizon's CDMA iPhone 4 was not suited for traveling business users.

6) RIM is losing carrier support in shelf space, promotion, eagerness for product certification.

7) Highly profitable monthly carrier subscriber fees to go lower as North America for RIM continues to go lower & network outages cause carriers to push back on these fees.

8) RIM is going through a business realignment (restructuring) and will reduce employee count at a time when we believe the company should be hiring to get product out on time versus delays.

9) Earnings per share growth will decline year over year and RIM's sales growth will be less than half of the industry's smartphone growth.

10) BYOD (bring your own device) and corporate sandboxing are only beginning and could severely impact RIM's subscriber base as many large corporations reassess their carrier data subscription plans on a annual basis so this cold start to be become a material challenge for RIM in calendar year 2012.

The MegaUpload Song: A Strange Gathering Of Celebrity Filesharing Advocates

The RIAA and MPAA, in their push to rid the internet of what they dub rampant piracy, have set internet storage locker sites like MegaUpload firmly in their crosshairs as well. While saying that a site like MegaUpload is illegal would likely spawn quite a bit of debate, copyright holders obviously see it as part of the problem.

A group of artists have contributed their two cents to a campaign promoting the usefulness and likability of MegaUpload ? and it?s a rather impressive group of artists at that. P. Diddy, Snopp Dogg, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, Lil Jon, Jamie Foxx, Brett Ratner and Mary J Blige are just a few of the stars that have voiced their support for the site in an incredibly odd yet somehow catchy song aptly titled ?The Mega Song.?

Check it out below:

Yes, you saw MegaUpload founder Kim Dotcom make an appearance in the video. Recently, Creative America put out a video detailing the horrors of content theft. In this video, they specifically go after Kim Dotcom, detailing his previous arrest for ?computer hacking? and suggesting that his advertisers fail to realize that they are running ads on an illegal site.

From the looks of this Mega Song, there are at least a decent number of A-listers that are pretty big fans of MegaUpload.

With all of the SOPA/PIPA drama going on in this country, this kind of topic is particularly relevant. It?s also just too damn strange to ignore.

Now Bing Powers Yahoo Organic Search...

...All Over The World Barring Korea. It's official now. Yahoo search is powered by Bing, whether it is a desktop search or a mobile one. Yahoo has given the lead to Microsoft Bing.

The only exception is of Korea where this algorithmic transition has not yet happened.

Yahoo Powered Bing

As Yahoo declared that the transition process is complete, and also explained why Korea remains outside the loop, Yahoo! has completed the algorithmic transition to Bing in all global markets (except Korea), across desktop and mobile, for all Yahoo! and syndication traffic. This has been a huge effort spanning 20-plus months involving many people across Yahoo! and Microsoft. Only Korea, which involves a three-way integration between Yahoo, Microsoft and Daum, remains, and is expected to complete by the end of the year.

This process of transferring the search algorithms started in August 2010, when Yahoo Search stopped providing their own algorithmic search results in the USA and Canada. The process of transfer has been slow and they have moved one country at a time, whilst Yahoo handing over their search technology and search engine to Microsoft.

The transfer process has not been easy, as Yahoo explains the process, We had to confirm Bing could handle Yahoos capacity across multiple global datacenters, including new ones that were brought online to serve the needs of the Search Alliance. The fact that all the cutovers went remarkably smoothly and were essentially non-events from an operational perspective is a testament to the thorough job both teams did.

Yahoo Bing

Now, the transition is nearly complete, with the exception of Korea. And that too will be done by the end of 2011. The transition wave reached Australia, Brazil and Mexico, and then Yahoo UK was powered by Bing. The Bing Yahoo Search alliance reached Asia markets in September, and now it is nearly done.

This transition is for organic search only. Paid search transition is still mid way. Do you think this search alliance will impact Google in any way? Do leave your comment.

The Return of the Worm That Ate the Pentagon

It?s back. The story of the worm that ate the Pentagon just won?t go away.

The attack of the Agent.btz worm, dubbed ?the most serious breach of the U.S. military?s classified computer systems,? is getting another telling, this time in the Washington Post. The story adds new details about the intrusion ? and reveals that some in the military wanted to use so-called ?offensive tools? to remove the malware on overseas and civilian networks. But the article still doesn?t uncover anything that justifies the hyperbole that the government has used for this breach since it was first uncovered.

Danger Room broke the story in November 2008 that the Army got spooked by Agent.btz after it was discovered crawling through the Secret Internet Protocol Router Network, which the Defense and State departments use to transmit classified material, noting at the time that the U.S. Strategic Command had suspended the use of USB drives as well as external hard drives and any other removable media as a result of the worm. The Post story adds that the Joint Worldwide Intelligence Communication System, which carries top-secret information to U.S. officials throughout the world, was also infected.

The Pentagon effort to disinfect systems took 14 months, in an operation dubbed ?Buckshot Yankee,? a process that eventually led the armed forces to revamp its information defenses and create a new military unit, U.S. Cyber Command.

Then last year, Deputy Defense Secretary William Lynn upped the quotient when he wrote in Foreign Affairs magazine that the worm was a deliberate attack by a foreign intelligence agency who had placed the worm on a flash drive. Small problem: He didn?t present any evidence to back up his assertion that this was anything more than a run-of-the-mill malware infection.

?That code spread undetected on both classified and unclassified systems, establishing what amounted to a digital beachhead, from which data could be transferred to servers under foreign control,? Lynn wrote. ?It was a network administrator?s worst fear: a rogue program operating silently, poised to deliver operational plans into the hands of an unknown adversary.?

Lynn never said if information actually was siphoned from the systems, nor does the Post say that anything was taken. All the Post says is that once on systems, the worm began ?beaconing? out to its creator ? that is, phoning home in the way that all botnet malware does once it?s on an infected system to receive instructions about what to do next.

The Post says the beacons were first noticed by an analyst in the NSA?s Advanced Networks Operations (ANO) team, a group of young techies housed on the NSA campus, whose job is to hunt for suspicious activity on the government?s secure networks. They then reached out to Richard C. Schaeffer Jr., the NSA?s top computer systems protection officer at the time.

On the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 24, [Schaeffer Jr.] was in an agency briefing with President George W. Bush, who was making his last visit to the NSA before leaving office. An aide handed Schaeffer a note alerting him to the breach.

At 4:30 p.m., Schaeffer entered the office of Gen. Keith Alexander, the NSA director and a veteran military intelligence officer? ?We?ve got a problem,? he said.

The ?problem? began in October 2008 in Afghanistan where someone appeared to pick up the infection from a cybercaf and passed it to government systems on an infected thumb drive.

?We knew fairly confidently that the mechanism had been somebody going to a kiosk and doing something they shouldn?t have as opposed to somebody who had been able to get inside the network,? one former official told the Post.

The worm spread widely on military computers around the world, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The article goes on to detail the process of neutralizing the malware on infected machines before cleaning out the code. Officials debated whether to use ?offensive tools to neutralize the malware on non-military networks,? including infected machines in other countries. Senior officials nixed the idea ?on the grounds that Agent.btz appeared to be an act of espionage, not an outright attack, and didn?t justify such an aggressive response.?

A few weeks later, the order went out banning the use of thumb drives, which generated a backlash among officers in the field, ?many of whom relied on the drives to download combat imagery or share after-action reports.?

The NSA and the military investigated for months how the infection occurred. They retrieved thousands of thumb drives, many of which were infected. Much energy was spent trying to find ?Patient Zero,? officials said. ?It turned out to be too complicated.?

?The rate of new infections finally subsided in early 2009. Officials say no evidence emerged that Agent.btz succeeded in communicating with a master computer or in putting secret documents in enemy hands.

But that?s not the end of the story. The phantom ?attack? on the Pentagon gave NSA Director Alexander the platform to press the case that the new Cyber Command should be able to use the NSA?s capabilities to obtain foreign intelligence to defend the military?s systems. It also renewed discussion among senior officials at the White House and key departments about how to best protect critical infrastructure networks that are in the hands of the private sector.

?Some officials argued that the military was better equipped than the Department of Homeland Security to respond to a major destructive attack on a power grid or other critical system, but others disagreed,? the Post writes.

It also raised questions about how aggressive military commanders could respond to perceived attacks on their computer systems.

?You have the right of self-defense, but you don?t know how far you can carry it and under what circumstances, and in what places,? recently retired vice chairman of the Joint Chief, James E. Cartwright Jr., told the paper. ?So for a commander who?s out there in a very ambiguous world looking for guidance, if somebody attacks them, are they supposed to run? Can they respond??

Stay tuned.
