The Importance of Videos on Your Site for SEO

The Importance of Videos on your Site

A few years ago it was flash – people who had the money to pay wizzo programmers had all sorts of complicated things going on on their websites. Pretty but totally impractical from an SEO point of view, and back then, for anyone who was suffering with a dial-up connection it just didn’t cut it.  Video has been the latest media to hit most websites, and if you don’t have it, you are missing out on a lot of traffic, and the chance for a little self-branding and attraction marketing.

Online internet marketing was a faceless world before the video phenomenon.  At first, only the better off marketers could afford to use video, as all the paraphernalia, programming and technology involved was so expensive and complicated. Now 4-year olds are making videos before they have learned to count their profits.

Avatars are old hat – I am certainly not going to buy something from someone who hides behind a shape. I want to see you, hear what you have to say and form an opinion of you and only then I might decide to trust you with my money.

Just when you think the world of internet marketing can’t get any better, along comes the smart phone and every company in the mobile device business (we can’t dare call them cell phones any more!) is scrambling to find the best way to get video to their latest device.

If only the rest of business in the US could keep up with the smart phone market.  With a growth of just under 100% between the third quarters of 2009 and 2010, the smart phone market just doesn’t stop and because there is so much competition, it’s great for the consumer.

You may think that watching videos on a mobile device isn’t too common.  Think again, mobile video is used by over 11% of global online consumers - even full episode viewing on mobile devices grew to 20%.

Right now, the technology still isn’t in place, but you know it’s just around the corner.  Depending on how old you are, this is definitely next generation stuff for me but I find it incredibly exciting and the possibilities are endless.  Video only works on modern platforms with modern browsers, and modern up-to-the-minute smart phones and mobile devices, but the modern people are coming, and they’ll eat it up.

Online Video and SEOI just hope that when everyone can watch full-length movies on their smart phones, the technology that will bring us cars that drive themselves will have already arrived.  It’s funny how Google is involved in both of these things…

The last few years have brought amazing changes to the way video is handled across websites, and most of it is gobbledygook to me. In this age of transparency, why can’t all these companies just get along and come up with a standard platform and operating system?

I would like to watch a few episodes of Monty Python’s Flying Circus on the train
up to Seattle, but sadly, until they get everything sorted out, I only have my dumb phone.
