Has Google Copied Blekko's SERP Layout?

Google's latest attempt of testing a new layout for its SERP is getting mixed reviews from Googlers. Some believe it is simply ugly, while others love that it is clean and clutter free.

The neater layout also has many users drawing comparisons to the Blekko and DuckdDuckGo search engines. Perhaps these relatively new/fresh search engines have inspired Google's new look.

Let's take a look...

This image below is of the new Google SERP layout.

While this image shows the Blekko and DuckdDuckGo SERPs.

I can certainly see the similarities in the simplicity.

Its worth noting that many new designs have been noticed during the testing process. In one of the test layouts the page looked cleaner with more spacing between the website links and descriptions which could result in less results appearing on a page. This will also mean that reaching the top spot on Google's SERP might become tougher increasing the value of the much coveted 'Google Top Spot'.

Other testing includes dotted lines between the organic search results, links being displayed without an underline and green text for search result.

This new layout doesn't just apply to the organic results. The paid ad listings have also been given a slight overhaul with Google putting a lot of thought on the strategic placement of ads in a bid to catch the users' attention.

All in all, the new layouts being tested underline the fact that Google is trying to simplify the look of its SERP giving users the sense that the results they are seeing are more accurate rather than a muddle of all results being stuffed into one page.
