Yahoo! Bing Transitions Expand To Asia Markets

Yahoo! and Bing have expanded combined search engine operation service for the Asian users. The markets that will come under the purview of this service include...

...Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan and Vietnam. However, a notable exception will be that of Korea.

In fact Yahoo! and Bing recently completed this algorithmic transition for the European markets of Greece, Poland, Romania, Turkey and Switzerland (in German, French and Italian languages, i.e. the three main languages of that country).

Yahoo and Bing

In August the duo announced a similar step for the following countries/regions- Austria, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Russia, the Netherlands, Sweden and MENA (Middle East and North African countries, in Arabic language). And that announcement had again come close on the heels of other similar announcements, wherein Yahoo! and Bing had informed about the launch of this service in various other countries, such as New Zealand, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Venezuela, USA, Mexico, France, Germany, India, Italy, Spain and UK.

Update: Google Will Spend Big to Outbid Yahoo for Hulu

Hulu must be one happy company at the moment " all the big names like Yahoo, Amazon, the Dish Network, and Google have placed an offer to buy out the company, so the bidding war has begun.

While most of the bidders placed a bid in the range of $1.5 to $2 billion, rumor has it that Google is so keen to purchase the company that it will make an over-the-top offer to out-do its competitors, especially Yahoo, who was the first company to show interest in buying Hulu.

Exact details on Googles offer amount havent been released yet, but its interesting to hear that it is willing to splash more cash, when it just purchased Motorola last month for a whooping $12 billion.

So what is it about Hulu that has attracted so many big names?

Well with this purchase comes Hulus video website and subscription service, along with two years of exclusive rights to their content. Currently, the site is a joint venture between NBCUniversal, Fox Entertainment Group and Disney-ABC Television Group, who collectively supply the lions share of the sites content.

Google is very interested in the sites content licensing agreements, which YouTube doesnt have. This would give Google the opportunity to revamp Google TV which has met a lot of resistance from content providers who blocked their content from Google TV-powered devices.

While its not certain that Hulu will sell, Googles highly ambitious bid is sure to make its owners think long and hard about the opportunity.

So where does this leave Yahoo? The company will have to dig deeper into its pockets to find the spare change it needs to compete with Google, if it wants any chance of securing Hulu.

Yahoo Sale: What They?re Saying

Some interesting reports have been coming out about the potential sale of Yahoo.

Bloomberg BusinessWeek is reporting that A group of investors led by private- equity firm Silver Lake offered to buy a minority stake in Yahoo! Inc. for about $16.60 a share. This comes from ?people with knowledge of the matter.?

This would value Yahoo at $20.6 billion.

Microsoft, Andreessen Horowitz and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board are part of the group.

Another offer was made by TPG Capital, and that was reportedly higher.

Om Malik writes, ?Last night a source of mine sent me a text message about spotting Jerry Yang and David Filo (in a suit) at Palo Alto?s Four Seasons Hotel in company of some serious looking men, who spend a lot of time (and money) appearing to be self-important, a skill they perhaps learn in business school. His pithy message to sum it all up ? looks like it is all going down.?

Rumors suggest Yang will remain on the Board. Malik runs down a few other rumors, such as the transaction is going to use PIPEs, OpenTable CEO Jeff Jordan will become CEO and Marc Andreessen will become chairman, KKR and Blackstone Group, Thomas H. Lee Parnters, and Alibaba along with Softbank and Blackstone all have their eyes on Yahoo.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Yahoo is looking to get a deal done by the end of the year.

Office for iPad in 2012?

The rumor mill has been thrown into high gear today on reports from The Daily that Microsoft is at long last preparing a version of its flagship Office software for Apple?s iPad. The Daily, citing internal sources, reports that Microsoft has several major projects in the works, including a new version of Office for Mac (the current version is not supported in OS 10.7 Lion) and the next iteration of the Windows operating system, Windows 8.

There have been no shortage of rumors in the past about Office coming to the iPad, and it is possible that the current crop of rumors will ultimately go nowhere. That being said, the timing makes sense. With new versions of Office and Windows in the works, an iOS version of Office would fit in nicely. Moreover, Apple?s own iWork productivity suite has been on the iPad for a long time, and sold well, while Office users have had to make do with third-party apps like Quickoffice [iTunes link], which are generally popular with users, but generate no revenue for Microsoft. Finally, Windows-based tablets have gained little ground in a tablet market so thoroughly dominated by the iPad that it can hardly be said to be a tablet market at all, but rather an iPad market.

That being the case, Office for iPad makes sense. However, there is no data at present on when we might expect to see Office come to the iPad, nor on pricing (though a price comparable to Apple?s iWork suite ? $10 per application ? seems likely). Reactions to the rumor on Twitter seem to be a mix of excitement and skepticism, with one user taking a humorously pessimistic view:

What do you think? Will Microsoft bring Office to the iPad? Will you be using it if they do? Let us know in the comments.

Facebook virus alert: Worm hidden in image of two blondes

Summary: A new worm is spreading on Facebook: once downloaded, it tempts the user into opening it by masquerading as a screensaver with a thumbnail image of two blonde women.

A new piece of malware is spreading across Facebook by leveraging either stolen account credentials or possibly a rogue app. This one is a worm that is being shared via malicious links on the social network, according to the Danish website CSIS.

If one of your Facebook friends has had his or her account compromised, you may be tempted to click on a link seemingly posted by them. What appears to be a screensaver, with a thumbnail image of two blonde women, will be downloaded onto your computer.

This is in fact a worm: do not download it and do not open it. If you think you have been affected, please read Facebook virus or account hacked? Here?s how to fix it.

When the file is opened, it attempts to download further malware, including a popular Trojan called Zeus. This type of malware can take over your computer and/or attempt to steal your banking information.

The malware?s code is written in Visual Basic 6.0 and includes ways of tricking users on virtual machines. The source appears to be a compromised Israeli website, which is no longer hosting the file in question. Still, hackers can always use additional websites to continue spreading their malware.

As a general word of caution, don?t click on everything your Facebook friends share on the social network. I have contacted Facebook to learn if it has blocked any unusual activity related to this latest worm and if it has any more information to offer.
